The novel could best be described as a combination of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and The Witcher with a splash of Highlander all wrapped in a hard boiled detective novel. Its main character, John Darkeson isn’t the typical hard drinking detective or standard plucky hero either. He has a stubborn streak a mile wide and has plenty of flaws but gets through the entire story with pure grit and stubborn determination. He is a sarcastic and somewhat awkward guy with some serious skills in magic and combat. There’s action, mystery, thrills and even a speckle of romance. He’s a sorcerer living in New York City who uses two types of magic, the first is to change his body, making him stronger, tougher, or faster but exhausts him from using it too much. The second is a series of magic swords he owns with different powers.
